A breath-taking Mexican beach break

Overlooking 5 kilometres of Mexico’s pristine Pacific coastline, the 30,000-acre Cuixmala estate boasts stunning beaches, lush jungle, sweeping savannah (complete with zebra and eland) and accommodation and dining to suit every taste.

Located on Mexico’s west coast between Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo, Cuixmala’s grass airstrip is a short hop by private aircraft from both international airports. Touch down in paradise and head straight to the beach or your luxurious accommodation. From ocean-front villas and cliff-top suites with panoramic views, to breezy hillside bungalows and cosy jungle casitas, Cuixmala offers accommodation to suit every taste.

Casa Cuixmala, formerly Sir James Goldsmith’s private residence, overlooks two miles of private beach, as well as lagoons, mountains and plantations. Its four luxurious suites include access to the spacious indoor and outdoor living areas and saltwater pool, as well as a dining room and TV room complete with a movie library and Netflix. The nearby bungalows offer a little more privacy, with their own terraces and living space, though guests are welcome to use Casa Cuixmala’s facilities, too. Suite and bungalow bookings all include a personal butler to take care of every detail during your stay.

For those in search of a true escape from the everyday, Cuixmala’s three secluded villas, known as Casas, are self-contained havens of calm. Choose from Casa Alborada with its sweeping views, roof terrace and private pool, Casa Torre with its gorgeous landscaped gardens and infinity pool, or stay a few steps from your own private beach at Casa La Playa, again with its own swimming pool. Each Casa comes with a live-in host and chef to cater to your every need.

Cuixmala’s ten charming Casitas offer a private jungle hideaway, in an independent area of the estate. These ten, cosy one-, two- and three-bedroom cottages decorated with traditional Mexican arts and crafts are arranged around a large shared swimming pool, with views across the coconut plantation and the Pacific in the distance. Each Casita has a private terrace, en-suite bathrooms, air-con and WiFi, along with a personal bar and a TV with DVD player and satellite. Acting as a clubhouse for Casita guests, Casa Gomez offers a traditional restaurant, bar, lounge and games room.

Covering 5 kilometres of the Pacific coast, Cuixmala offers access to three beautiful beaches, each with its own unique characteristics. The long stretch of Playa Cuixmala with its powerful waves is a breath-taking place for an early morning walk and a spectacular spot to catch the sunset. If you fancy a swim though, you’ll need to head elsewhere. Its calmer cousin, Playa Caleta Blanca is much better suited to swimming and snorkelling, and guests can even enjoy kayaking, paddle boarding and boat trips. There’s also a beach bar and restaurant if you plan to make a day of it. The waves at rugged Playa Escondida make for a more challenging swim, but most prefer just to kick back with a picnic and enjoy the view.

Cuixmala’s spacious yoga studio is the perfect place to unwind, with its stunning views over the property and the ocean beyond. Made using bamboo from the estate, the studio also offers meditation classes for total relaxation. Massages, manicures, pedicures and beauty treatments can all be enjoyed in the privacy of your room, while massages are also available in the massage palapa at Playa Caleta Blanca.

Thanks to its diverse landscape and ocean-front setting, Cuixmala is surrounded by wildlife and opportunities for exploration. Perhaps the highlight of the estate’s activities is the turtle release. Accompanied by experts from the Cuixmala Foundation’s marine turtle conservation program, guests can take part in an unforgettable evening helping hatchlings safely reach the sea. Slightly inland, the estate’s animal sanctuary is home to more than 40 zebra and 20 eland, who roam free at the foot of Casa Cuixmala. Spot them any time from the road or explore on horseback for an up-close experience.

To get a better sense of the scale of the property, an ATV adventure is a must. Wind your way through lush jungle and open savannah en route to a beautiful vista point and a refreshing drink. Then weave back to the beach at Playa Escondida to cool off in the surf. If you fancy venturing further out to sea, Costa Alegre is teeming with beautiful marine life. Hop on Cuixmala’s 25-foot catamaran and cruise along the coast for a spot of whale- and dolphin-watching, or set sail on Mercury, the estate’s beautiful 47-foot ketch, stopping off to snorkel and swim. You can even bring in your own catch of the day, which can then be prepared by the estate’s chefs. For something a little less taxing, the lagoon tour is a peaceful way to while away an evening. Weave through the mangroves on board a quiet electric boat, spotting migratory birds and sipping a sundowner.

Almost everything that’s served on the estate comes from Cuixmala’s own organic and biodynamic farm, which is well worth a visit. Guests can choose from the charming Casa Gomez, elegant Casa Cuixmala or casual Caleta Blanca restaurant, or have chefs prepare special picnics to enjoy on the beach. The team can even arrange everything from private dinners for two to all-night parties with live mariachi or DJ sets. For the ultimate holiday experience, a beach bonfire is hard to beat. Settle in with a cocktail as the crackling of the fire mingles with the crashing of the waves and the sky slowly fills with stars. Heaven.

The best of both

Mix beach and mountains by adding a stop at Cuixmala’s sister property, Hacienda de San Antonio, to your itinerary.
