About the Venice Film Festival
The Venice Film Festival has been running since 1932, making it the world’s oldest film festival. Held every two years, the 11-day event celebrates the best in world cinema and draws film critics, actors and paparazzi from around the world. Screenings take place in a beautiful waterfront location at Palazzo del Cinema on the Venice Lido.
It was the Biennale’s president, Count Giuseppe Volpi, who first had the idea of holding a film festival in Venice. The inaugural event took place in August 1932, with Rouben Mamoulian’s Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde becoming the first film shown, and today cinema buffs eagerly await the announcement of the opening film to premiere at the festival.
The most prestigious awards handed out at the festival are the Golden Lion for best film and the Grand Jury Prize, which is thought of as the runner’s-up gong. The best director receives the Silver Lion, while the Volpi Cups are awarded to the best actor and actress.
