Translocating white rhinos from South Africa
In May 2023, we were contacted to arrange a series of charters to relocate several white rhinos to Garamba National Park, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The initial charter was for two moves of eight southern white rhinos who were being moved from South Africa to a region where this species of rhino is extinct.
Our Solution
Route: South Africa > Democratic Republic of the Congo
Aircraft: Hercules L-100
With the destination not having the required equipment to offload the cargo, and the runway originally chosen by the client in the DRC being inside the nature reserve, we had to think outside the box to find a solution. We knew that having a rear-loading aircraft would be paramount to the success of this operation. So, our team of experts sourced a Hercules L-100 knowing that it would be the most suitable aircraft for this complex charter even though it would need to perform two flights as each rhino weighed around two tons or more.
Along with other logistical challenges, we found out that the original destination’s runway was too short and turning radius wouldn’t allow the aircraft to land. Our team communicated with all stakeholders to agree on an alternative airport. Given that the rhinos were being relocated to Garamba National Park, we suggested changing flying to Doko International, where the runways would be better equipped to handle this type of aircraft.
Through careful planning, we were able to perform both flights in the same week, with both being loaded at night and both arriving at first light in Kibali.
